Mazzy goes to School

I guess this is how parents feel when they send their children off to kindergarten. Since I only have fury children, and not the human species, I do not know. Chad and I took the four plus hour trek today so Mazzy could start learning to be a riding horse. I have high hopes for her, so it is a big decision. I want things started right, or else I could be spending her lifetime "fixing" her. Of course there are a multitude of choices to consider and I have been weighting my options for about a year now. I know I do not have the time to properly start her, so who would I trust with my sweet baby that I have raised from birth? I chose a man that I have seen the results from his training. One of the most important factors for me is available time. Someone who has so many horses to train that they can only spend 30 minutes a day can not give her the mileage I am looking for, that will come soon enough when she moves to the busy show barn. I know and have seen many horses this man has started and trained. What's better than seeing the results? This guy is a horseman who works not only for the client, but for the horse. He mentors the horse, he nurtures the horse, and he cares about the horse.

These are Mazzy's new neighbors (check out those horns!)

Mazzy was so calm when she arrived

In 90 days of training, they work in the arena, work cows and go on trail rides through the hills. Mazzy is going to be on a dude ranch! They give to pressure, walk, trot, canter, stop square and leg yield with the slightest cues. They tie, trailer, clip, and bathe, everything without pulling back. There is no lunging prior to riding, no having to use a round pen at home, just get on. He stands behind his work with a great amount of integrity. Integrity is such a good quality and yet it is something that is hard to find in most people these days.

Mazzy's Cowboy

I saw him work with a couple horses today and he is so calm and gentle and the horses have complete respect for him. He can walk trot and canter on horses that he has only had under saddle for 60 days. I am so excited for Mazzy to get to know him.

The grey horse above is my friend's horse. She was bucking off her trainer, so she was sent here to be "fixed". I watched her go, and she was completely well behaved and "fixed". I was very excited to report back to my friend how well she was doing.

Having sent a horse off for training and sent a kid off for her first day of school.... it feels a lot more similar than I had originally expected. It looks and sounds like she is in very good hands.

Aw, Mazzy goes to school. Looks like a great place for her. Love that longhorn, and your friends beautiful grey horse!

Best thing for a horse is to see some cows. Seriously. It makes normal life seem easy. :)

I'm glad you found a good place to start Mazzy. From the looks and sound of it the place and the trainer seem like a good start for any horse. I like that he takes the time each horse needs and proceeds with a gentle and calm manner.

Oh my goodness, I would love to send my baby there. I know you are going to miss her but it's so wonderful you've found someone great.

I'm a little late to the party here - haven't been to your blog in awhile so I have some catching up to do. It was ironic to see that you sent Mazzy off to a cowboy because I also did the same for Vigo in June! He started being very naughty, disrespectful, rude and downright dangerous. Although the trainer I sent him to isn't a cowboy, she does the roundpen work and all sorts of exercises to keep the horse respectful and out of your space. I am so thrilled with the finished product. Vigo is a changed man and all of our rides are just awesome now. I'm so glad I sent him away.
