She wanted to run

I had a nice ride this morning and afterward decided to let Kylie run around in the lower arena. It was a quiet day with most everyone at a horse show. Kylie doesn't utilize her turnout time wisely (she just stands in the corner waiting to come back in) so I thought she could use a good stretch and clean out her lungs. She really wasn't in the mood to do very much, so I tried encouraging her. I was the one breathing hard, and she would just circle around me and stop in the same place, looking back up at the barn. Okay, I was getting more of a workout that she was, and I should have just left it at that, but I didn't. I decided to get her going by waving my arms and clucking and swinging the lead rope (looking like an idiot) then run to the place where she was turning to circle so I could head her off and make her use the entire arena.....

I headed her off all right, but she had other plans. Instead of turning right to circle back up at the top and stop like she had done the five previous times, she went straight...didn't even hesitate, and jumped in beautiful form with a perfect distance right out of the arena . She was apparently not interested in being chased around today. I honestly couldn't have gotten a better jump out of her if I had been riding her and I'm sure if I headed to the gate to jump it she would have swerved, spooked and thought I was crazy. I wish I had it on video, it left me standing there for a second chuckling. Then she decided to really put on the gas and gallop up past the other rings screaming, past the horses in the turnouts, and right back to her stall. Luckily there weren't many people around and she didn't cause too much commotion. She wanted to run, but on her own terms. That's my girl, always leaves me guessing...or wondering what the heck???

The only time I got her to go all the way around.

Very funny! Once, when my older daughter was riding in jumpers (before she taught her horse to stop!), she came to the end of a round, she went through the timers and was working to slow her horse down when she turned towards the arena rail in an attempt to brake. The mare slowed briefly, and then jumped out of the arena, with spectators scattering. Mind you, the arena fence was 4 feet and the mare came almost to a stop before she jumped. My daughter placed in the class since she'd already gone through the timers! We actually have it on tape, since the round was being professionally taped.

Horses are so silly! They always seem to think they can outsmart us! Apparently Kylie really wanted to go back to her stall!
That arena looks huge to be running after a horse! I'd be out of breathe too!

Yep, that's what drives me crazy about horses. They've got a mind of their own and aren't afraid to use it. tee hee
Loved that video. She is beautiful.

Ha! What a funny girl! They definitely know what they want don't they? At least you didn't have to worry about where she was running...you knew she'd be headed back to the stall, I'm sure! ;)

She is beautiful. It must feel like you're flying when you jump on a horse. I'm still trying to get up the nerve to take my horse out on trails!
