Mazzy's First Horse Show (under saddle)

Mazzy made her debut under saddle today in a horse show. Overall it was a very positive experience. She was completely unphased by the tents, vans, crowds, loudspeaker, cheering etc. We did not get extra points for trying out a flying lead change while passing someone. By the way she has no idea what a flying lead change is. I went to pass someone and as I moved her over back onto the rail, we were all of a sudden on the wrong lead...oops! Until this past week her leads have not been a problem, but this week she decided to switch it up a little. She doesn't necessarily have a preference, but she will pick up the counter lead going either direction if she feels inclined. My trainer says she is figuring out her balance and it will pass. Something that is very much taken for grated on my other horse. Kylie is so easy to pick up either leads on, I can counter canter her around on a small circle and she changes leads so easily. The slightet cue and she picks up whatever lead I want. Something I never have to worry about in a show. Not the case with the baby...yet. I was very proud of my little three year old, she was the only three year old competing today and since I rode her in an open class her competition ranged from trainers to seasoned horses. But it was not about competition for us this show it was all about having a fun, positive experience, which we did. I was very proud of Mazzy since she has only been broke a few months. She gets next week off to recouperate from a tiring week of learning.

I also had my jewelry booth set up in a prime spot between the hospitality tent and the awards booth with a great view to watch all my friends and cheer them on. There were lots of ribbons won and lots of great prizes and raffles. It was a very fun and tiring day! Lots of good friends, good sportsmanship, and good riding.

What a great experience for Mazzy!! Glad to hear all went well, except for the unexpected lead change! My Brandy does that, she actually crossfires a lot. But I don't do enough consistent loping with her. My fault!

That's great that she did so well at her first show! My mare tends to get pretty excited in company - I think she wishes she were a racehorse! I don't really show anymore, but might take her to a nearby one to hang our and hack around just as a learning exercise.

Good for you! I am grinning like a fool for you - having a young horse in a show can be either a pleasure or a nightmare and I am glad you had such a great time :)

Wow, I'm so impressed. I can't believe how well she's doing for being broke such a short time. It's really a testament to your skills as a rider.
