Art Night

Tonight we went to Pasadena's annual Art Night with Ave & Tony. Free shuttles loop throughout the evening with stops at each of about 13 cultural institutions opening their doors for FREE. We started with an early dinner at Matsuri and then went to Cherry on Top for dessert. It is a self-serve yogurt bar where you help yourself to a variety of about 10 flavors (cake batter, blueberry-pomogranite, orange cream, cheesecake, green tea, etc.) and then top it with whatever you like.

There are about 100 toppings to choose from...blackberries, kiwi, raspberries, Reese's, Snickers, m&m's, Cap'n Crunch, Cookie Crisp, Fruity Pebbles, nuts, granola, sprinkles, cheesecake bites, caramel, chocolate, and marshmallow syrup. Weird thing was, considering the name, there were no CHERRIES anywhere to be found. You then pay by weight. I'm trying not to make a habit out of this place!

We caught the shuttle at Pasadena City College where a jazz band was playing and headed to Pasadena Museum of California Art for our first stop.

In the Main Gallery, Wayne Thiebaud: 70 Years of Painting; in the Back Gallery Behold the Day: The Color Block Prints of Frances Gearhart. You know you've been remodeling too long when you look beyond the art to the wall it is hanging on and admire the smooth drywall and the clean lines of painting on the actual walls. I did like Frances Gearhart's block prints.
Next stop was Pacific Asia Museum,
We were running low on time so we walked over to the Armory Center for the Arts to view the Armory's 20th anniversary exhibition featuring 20 artists, including Bruce Nauman, Ed Ruscha, Sarah Perry, Edgar Arceneaux, Betye Saar. Also, 3-D films and photographs by L.A. 3-D Club. Music by Kan Zaman. My favorite exhibit there was the cloud room. Sarah Perry’s room-like installation, π, appears to be an aerial view of a city at night seen through the clouds. Visitors pass through the work on a slightly elevated walkway so they feel, amazingly, as if they are denying gravity as several hundred white feathers are suspended above their heads, each with part of the numerical value of π written on the surface. The only light in the room in what is shining up through the cotton clouds. Beautiful!

We then stopped by Ave's favorite store the "creepy chic" Gold Bug for their anniversary celebration. They have a very unique collection of art, jewelry, and rarities. "Museum of Weird" with outrageous prices. Butterfly and beetle specimens, old anatomical drawings, graphite bird claw pencils, Goths, Witches and VooDoo. Some cool jewelry, but nothing I couldn't live without.

Other venues we didn't make it to tonight were the Norton Simon Museum of Art, Alliance Francaise de Pasadena, Art Center College of Design, Kidspace Children’s Museum, Pasadena Central Library, Pasadena Museum of History, Pasadena Symphony Association. Next year.

sounds like you need a few nights to take in all the sites and entertainment. Love that feather installation - bet that was something to see!
